About the Course
This workshop offers an introduction to the craft of traditional millinery. Participants will explore the materials, tools and techniques used in hat making, including different types of felt, summer materials and wooden hat blocks, with guidance on sourcing suppliers.
The programme includes a demonstration of blocking techniques followed by the making of a hat in lapin felt or straw. Participants will learn how to shape the hat, apply internal and external grosgrain ribbon, stiffen and finish felt and straw, and complete the brim using traditional millinery tools.
All work is carried out by hand using needle and thread; no sewing machine is required. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with their own handmade hat and the basic knowledge to begin making hats independently.
